Having A Good Manager Can Help You Disconnect When Needed
I am not an employer, but mine does encourage me to disconnect.
When I started this position back in April, I became 100% work from home. This brings the opportunity to ‘check in’ all of the time. My manager recognized this and he gave me a few points to try and disconnect. His first and foremost suggestion was to leave the Blackbarry at home when I am not at work or on call. This has been the single most effective suggestion I could have taken.
Second, he enouraged me to only work my 80 hours per period. If I go over on Tuesday, leave early on Friday or how ever it works out. In a salaried position, it is rare to hear an employer make such a suggestion and it has been nice to not be expected to put in 90-100 hours a period. The third suggestion was to use my vacation time. I had managed to accure 5 weeks or so in my last position because I wasn’t doing any of the above. To use it up, I am taking a three week trip to Asia.
